O inglês exige três escolhas distintas nessas frases: in the bag, on the wall, at the counter.

Três maneiras de ver um lugar: in, on, at

  • IN trata o lugar como recipiente ou área delimitada: in the drawer, in the elevator, in the living room, in Minas Gerais, in the garden, in the river.
  • ON trata o lugar como superfície ou linha, com contato: on the desk, on the door, on the ground, on the roof, on the first floor, on the border.
  • AT trata o lugar como ponto, uma referência no mapa ou um endereço, sem pensar no interior: at the gate, at the counter, at the crossroads, at the top of the hill, at 10 Downing Street.

She's in the bank enfatiza que ela está dentro do prédio; She's at the bank apenas informa onde ela está, provavelmente resolvendo algo.

PreposiçãoIdeiaExemplos típicos
indentro de um espaço ou áreain an office, in a town, in a country, in the ocean, in bed, in a picture, in a magazine
oncontato com superfície ou linhaon the desk, on the ceiling, on a page, on a lake, on the coast, on the right, on the list
atponto de referência ou eventoat home, at work, at university, at the airport, at a concert, at the bottom, at the crossroads
  • I left my glasses on the bathroom shelf.Deixei meus óculos na prateleira do banheiro.
  • The documents are in the blue folder.Os documentos estão na pasta azul.
  • Let's meet at the main gate at nine.
  • My cousins live in a village on the border with Uruguay.

  • Veículos: on the bus, on the train, on the plane, on a ferry, on a motorbike para transportes grandes ou em que se monta; in a car, in a taxi, in a canoe para veículos pequenos em que você entra e se senta.
  • Eventos e encontros: at a conference, at a party, at a funeral, at a match.
  • Ruas e endereços: on Main Street (uso americano) ou in Bond Street (uso britânico); com número, at 45 Bond Street.
  • Andares: on the ground floor, on the tenth floor.
  • Textos e telas: in a book, in the article, in the photo, porém on page 32, on the screen, on the internet, on the news.
  • Lados e cantos: on the left; in the corner de um cômodo, mas at the corner de duas ruas; in the middle.
  • There was no free seat on the train, so I stood the whole way.Não tinha lugar livre no trem, então fiquei em pé o caminho todo.
  • The driver is waiting in the taxi outside.O motorista está esperando no táxi lá fora.
  • I bumped into my old teacher at a conference in Curitiba.
  • The dentist's office is on the ninth floor.O consultório do dentista fica no nono andar.
  • You'll find the answer on page 32.Você vai encontrar a resposta na página 32.

Posições relativas: under, above, between, opposite...

  • under e below: abaixo. Under sugere proximidade ou cobertura; below indica só nível inferior.
  • over e above: acima. Over costuma envolver cobertura ou passagem; above, apenas altura maior.
  • next to, beside, by: ao lado. near: perto, sem of.
  • between: entre dois (ou itens bem definidos). among: no meio de um grupo indistinto.
  • in front of: diante de, do mesmo lado. behind: atrás. opposite (britânico) ou across from (americano): do lado oposto, de frente.

Armadilha para brasileiros: "em frente" no sentido de "do outro lado da rua" não é in front of, e sim opposite ou across from.

  • Your slippers are under the sofa.Suas pantufas estão embaixo do sofá.
  • We hung the clock above the door.Penduramos o relógio acima da porta.
  • The hotel is between the station and the old market.O hotel fica entre a estação e o mercado antigo.
  • Is there a pharmacy near here?Tem uma farmácia perto daqui?
  • The gym is opposite the post office.

Movimento para dentro e para cima: into, onto, out of, off

Enquanto in e on informam onde algo está, into e onto informam para onde algo vai.

  • The kids are in the pool. (estão dentro)
  • The kids jumped into the pool. (pularam para dentro)

Cada uma tem seu oposto: out of desfaz into (sair de dentro), e off desfaz onto (sair de cima).

Na linguagem falada, in e on aparecem com frequência depois de put, throw, drop (Drop it in the basket). Porém, com verbos de deslocamento do corpo, como walk, run, go, get, come, o into é o que marca a entrada: He ran into the kitchen.

  • She stepped into the elevator and pressed 12.Ela entrou no elevador e apertou o 12.
  • The cat jumped onto the windowsill.O gato pulou no parapeito da janela.
  • Take the pizza out of the oven in ten minutes.Tire a pizza do forno em dez minutos.
  • A glass fell off the tray and shattered.
  • We got on the wrong bus and ended up downtown.Pegamos o ônibus errado e fomos parar no centro.

Trajetórias: across, through, along, past, around

acrosslado a lado, sobre superfícieThe kids ran across the field.
throughpor dentro, de ponta a pontaWe pushed through the crowd.
alongacompanhando o comprimentoWalk along this corridor to the exit.
pastpassando ao lado, sem pararThe bus went past my stop.
aroundcontornando / por vários pontosShe showed us around the museum.
overpor cima, transpondoThe ball flew over the wall.
  • We cycled across the bridge at sunrise.
  • The road goes through three small towns.
  • Let's walk along the canal for a while.
  • The dog ran towards the gate as soon as it heard the car.O cachorro correu em direção ao portão assim que ouviu o carro.

Chegar: arrive in, arrive at, get to

  • arrive in + cidade, região ou país, lugares entendidos como área: arrive in Madrid, arrive in Argentina.
  • arrive at + ponto específico, como prédios, estações, eventos: arrive at the airport, arrive at the party, arrive at work.
  • arrive home, sem preposição nenhuma.

O verbo get, mais coloquial, segue outro padrão: sempre get to (get to the office, get to Lisbon), exceto em get home. Os verbos go e come também usam to.

  • The delegation arrived in Brasília on Monday.A delegação chegou a Brasília na segunda-feira.
  • We arrived at the hotel just before midnight.Chegamos ao hotel pouco antes da meia-noite.
  • How long does it take to get to the airport from here?
  • She usually gets home at half past six.

Lugares sem artigo: in bed, at work, in hospital

Quando a expressão fala da função do lugar, e não do objeto ou prédio, o artigo some: in bed (deitado, dormindo), at home, at work, at school, in hospital no inglês britânico (os americanos preferem in the hospital). Com artigo, a atenção volta para o móvel ou a construção: on the bed descreve alguém sentado ou algo apoiado no colchão.

  • Don't call now, he's probably in bed already.Não ligue agora, ele provavelmente já está na cama.
  • The clean towels are on the bed.

Entrar e sair de veículos: get in x get on

A distinção entre in e on reaparece nos verbos de movimento. Carros, táxis e vans pequenas usam get in / get into e get out of; ônibus, trens, aviões, navios, bicicletas e motos usam get on e get off.

  • We got out of the taxi in front of the theater.Descemos do táxi em frente ao teatro.
  • Get off at the third stop and turn left.Desça no terceiro ponto e vire à esquerda.

Home, abroad, upstairs: advérbios que dispensam preposição

Depois de verbos de movimento como go, come, get, drive, fly, walk, a palavra home não recebe preposição. O mesmo vale para abroad, upstairs, downstairs, here, there, everywhere: diga fly abroad, nunca fly to abroad.

  • I'll drive you home after the show.
  • My sister went upstairs to get her coat.Minha irmã subiu para pegar o casaco.
